How important can proper drilling really be? |
|
The first thing I do to get my egg ready for drilling is take the “marking tape” and tape the lines to be drilled. For instance, if I am going to cut an oval opening, I tape the oval opening with the tape (it is 1/16” wide) and then I cut along side the tape. This makes for a cleaner cut than trying to follow a pencil mark. I do the same for any lattice I am going to cut. I use a Turbo Carver air drill with an air compressor to cut the egg. I cut on the lines marked for the 3 ovals and the lattice. I use a drill bit #699. The drilling takes place after all lines to be drilled have been properly marked. The drilling is done in a “Dust Box” or similar device that draws the dust from the egg so that you do not breathe the dust into your lungs. YOU SHOULD NOT DRILL without a dust box or device of some kind. After I have completed the cutting I look for any imperfections in the cutting. If any, I correct them, such as, in the lattice work, maybe the diamonds are not all cut exactly straight, or just need a little modification in the corners, ect. It is now time to clean your egg. There are times that you clean your egg before you drill. If you use water-slip flower or Classic seals you should clean the egg before you start any designing. When to clean the egg varies with each design. |
