Designing Eggs with True Creativity and Insight.

The method of cleaning the egg.

I clean out the inside of my eggs by using Clorox bleach.

The cleaning of the egg is a very meticulous procedure and must be done with great care.  If you are going to carve the egg you may want to clean the egg after the carving has been completed.  This would remove any dust particals, etc. that would be on your egg after carving.   I usually do not clean an egg to have the filigree cut until after the cutting so the egg will have all the strength possible while doing the cutting.  After the filigree cutting has been completed the egg is cleaned and then sealed.

I use rubber gloves to protect my hands and put the bleach inside the egg with a syringe bubble.  I put the Clorox in the syringe and insert it into the egg and then submerge it in bleach.  The time the egg is allowed to remain submerged in the bleach is determined by the type of egg.  The bleach will cause a foaming as it eats away at the membrane inside the egg.  I then position the egg upright for around 20 minutes (for a goose egg), then I remove the Clorox by sucking out the Clorox with the syringe or gently shaking the egg to rid it of the liquid inside.  Once the Clorox is out I wash the egg three or four times to rid the egg of any Clorox.  I hold it to the light and if I think it is clean, then I am ready to drill and mark the egg.  If I think there is still material to be removed I follow the steps above again.

You need to seal the egg after cleaning with paint or sealer.  (Do not do this if you are preparing the egg for a filigree cut.)  Sealers should be added after cutting.  Also, I sometimes do not paint the outside of the egg until after I have completed by cutting.  The paint or sealer will “curl” where you make a cut.
